Colour is arguably the most important thing in clothing. Neither silhouettes or fabric are as widely conveying as the hue and visual textures of an item. And as trivial as it may sound, every cycle we begin to see many bold interpretations and creative uses of colour. Enough that it is rankable. Here are what may be considered the best colour and pattern trends of the year. They are not just ranked best in terms of popularity but also in the creativity in relative to ubiquity. There may be some very obvious ones though.

Black

While it may appear as a timeless colour and is beyond the point of ubiquity, it was still good year for black. Punk, goth and scene resurgence picked up very quickly and in came many interesting and activated imaginations of black in clothing. A lot of street style increasing in drill and grime communities brought light to some uniquely clandestine pseudo-techwear as well.

Plaid

Great year for plaid. It is a very old school pattern and vintage is always new when it comes to fashion plaid was a welcome trend in normcore and academia styles as well as many 70s trends that blew up this year. Tartan, glen and tattersall had an especially cool year, but standard check and windowpane were much bigger on the runway.

Floral

Cottagecore is arguably one of the greatest and most unusual trends to blow up but if it is to be thanked for anything it would be putting floral back on the map. In both street style and runway style the floral pattern has been showing up non stop and in a non-botanical way it has been the most refreshing thing to see. It is unusual that an aesthetic as asynchronous as cottagecore would catch on but it has.

Brown

2020 was a great year for a lot of 70s and 80s trends and with them they brought a colour reminiscent of the most warmly nostalgic feelings, brown. Brown looks good especially on a heavier fabric like suede or corduroy, both of which have been having some nice spots on the runway radar. Brown is a very rich and textured colour and is vey deserving of some tume in the streetwear bubble.

2020 felt like a long year for fashion but in hindsight everything was actually a little faster. There are too many colour uses to wholly discuss at one time but there always feels like there is a biggest. Streetwear does not slow down and good trends surface at an inconsistent pace. Trends that catch on simply captivate us in a way that reassures our own predictions. There usually aren’t many, and this year they certainly were not.
